HTL Book Report | WATERCOLOR LIFE

“I think everybody has an innate style, the way everybody has handwriting unique to them. Your handwriting might change slightly over the years, but there is probably something intrinsically you about it that remains. I think painting and drawing are the same.” ~Emma Block

MATERIALS:
You’ll find 12 pages of useful reading on paint, paper, brushes and other optional materials…consider taking notes.

COLOR:
Emma reviews the basics of color theory, encourages playing with colors you have in your palette and suggests a color mixing practice before starting any project.

TECHNIQUES:
With a more comprehensive explanation is provided in her first book, a basic technique glossary is included in this book as well.

REVIEW:
As a follow up to her first book, The Joy of Watercolor, Emma hopes to build confidence and skills with 40 new lessons. Directions are accessible for artists of all levels. She’s consistent in her approach, providing clear details on what you’ll need, recommended colors, and concise directions for each step of the process. Plan to start off with a very light pencil sketch before picking up your paintbrush. Enjoy helpful hints along the way to aid in trying out new techniques or what to do during your unfortunate but common ‘what-if’ moments. Know you’re not alone…we’ve all been there.

WHAT I LOVE:
The lessons in this book are broken out into seven categories (WOW, WOD, Color Pooling, Masking Fluid, Expressive Brushstrokes, Painting People, and Decorative Paintings) - so can select a specific subject or technique to practice. I love the creative freedom this book provides.

NOTE: If you’re new to watercolors, I highly recommend Emma’s first book, The Joy of Watercolors. But the truth is, you’ll most definitely want both on your bookshelf. You’re welcome.
